No!!! When I finished school I wanted to be a writer. And I’ve done many different kinds of jobs in my life.
It’s interesting that you’re thinking both about being a lawyer and about researching diseases. There are a lot of jobs in law that are related to science — like
– working for the patent office (deciding whether inventions are really new & whether they get to be protected)
– working in intellectual property law
No. But the longer I went through school, the more I realised how much I enjoyed doing Science. When I applied for university, I hadn’t even decided whether I wanted to do Physics, Chemistry or Maths. So I applied for all 3!
Interesting… I think that I am going to take triple science for GCSEs, maybe I will discover an area of science that facsinates me the most! At the moment I like chemistry but if I were to be anything to do with science I would want to work to find a cure for diseases like HIV. My cousin worked in Africa in this line of work and I found it really interesting!
Triple science sounds like a great plan! I wonder if you could get a work placement in a laboratory — or maybe at a company that gets patents. Pharmaceutical companies might be interesting, or medical labs. Ask older students about their work placements — where they were placed, what they did. And see if your cousin knows researchers or labs in your area.
Since chemistry is your favourite at the moment, have you seen ChemNet? Lots of info on jobs in chemistry. http://chemnet.rsc.org/home
While you’re still in school, see if you can meet some working scientists. There are LOTS of different types of jobs, even within a single field.
