Nowadays it doesn’t matter that much either way. I work on a Mac laptop and a Windows desktop, the they both work really well and do everything I need.
I kind of agree with Rob on this one, although I don’t use Windows. I use a Mac laptop and a Linux desktop, but mainly because most radio astronomy software doesn’t work under Windows.
Although I’m not a fan of Macs, it’s only really because I feel your paying extra for the thing to look a bit nicer. I really like Using LIUNX as an OS, but find I have to keep a windows machine to run things like office and other software where the open source alternative isn’t quite as good.
It depends what you want to do. The bad thing about BOTH Mac’s and PC’s is that it’s getting harder to tinker with computers — except Linux-based ones.
The thing I love about using a Mac is that I can use a really powerful command-line interface (Terminal) OR I can use a shiny desktop. When I started using a Mac, a lot of the software that I wanted didn’t exist for other computers…. Mac software is still better for graphic design and photo editing but it just matters if you can run the software you want for whatever you want to do.
